WiSe 12/13: V-Semantics and Pragmatics I

Gerhard Leitner

Comments

The seminar will cover central areas of semantics, pragmatics and intercultural communication. We will start with lexical and sentence semantics, come to the distinction between semantics and pragmatics and show the relationship with syntax. We will then move to intercultural communication and writing. Some theoretical background will be included as well as the relationship of language with culture and thought. The implications of semantics and pragmat-ics on the writing of dictionaries, i.e. lexicography, and reference aids for teachers and the study of meaning from a quantitative (corpus linguistic) perspective will be mentioned throughout.

There are a number of introductions to the areas of the seminar. Older ones are Palmer (1981), Leech (1981), Cruse (1986) and Saaed (1997), all of which are worth using. Cruse (1990) is a good brief introduction to lexical semantics. Lyons (1995) is a detailed and very good study of semantics and those parts of pragmatics that will be dealt with in this seminar. But the book is better for students who want to pursue these areas in greater detail. An older but still useful contrastive semantic study of German and English is Leisi (1973). (There are also some intro-ductions in German such as by Lipka.) As to pragmatics, one could recommend Thomas (1995) and Verschueren (1999). Intercultural communication will be dealt with in some detail as we go along. close
