WiSe 12/13: Internationaler Menschenrechtsschutz - Politik und Praxis

Katrin Kinzelbach

Comments

The aim of this course is to provide students with advanced knowledge on human rights as an international political phenomenon. Following a discussion of the theoretical and historical foundations of international human rights, the first section of the course will introduce legal norms, international mechanisms and core substantive issues. In the second section, students will learn practical skills required by international human rights professionals. This will be done through a number of exercises, for example: drafting an urgent appeal on an individual case; issuing a press release on a thematic issue; briefing a head of state on a country situation; interviewing a human rights victim; making a statement at the Human Rights Council; formulating a resolution; preparing a technical cooperation project document in accordance with the human rights based approach (HRBA). Instead of a final seminar paper, students will be required to submit several short written assignments based on the above-mentioned exercises and to make oral presentations in class.
