WiSe 13/14: Changing World Order: The View from China and India

May-Britt Stumbaum

Comments

The global power shift of today's world is driven by a resurgent Asia, making it imperative for traditional powers like the United States and the European Union to engage with these emerging actors, and for students of Politics and International Relations to acquire a new angle to study actors such as China and India. A crucial precondition for such an engagement is the ability to understand the world from the perspective of these two actors. Removing itself from a Eurocentric view of international relations this course traces the factors and causes that affect Chinese and Indian perceptions of the global political system, focusing on the historical, cultural and political identities of these two countries. From postcolonial perspectives the course moves to modern-day economic power of China and India to draw out the changes that general and elite attitudes have undergone in these countries. Starting from theoretical approaches to International Relations in China and India the course provides an insight into the two countries' perspectives on the current and changing international order and vis-à-vis key actors such as the BRICS, US and the European Union. In a special session on Afghanistan post 2014 the new dynamics will be applied and tested. By the end of this course students will not only have a sophisticated understanding of the current political systems in China and India but will also be able to analyze their current position in the world, and recognize nuances, similarities and differences between two of the biggest emerging global actors - India and the People's Republic of China. close
