WiSe 13/14: V-Survey of Language and Linguistics

As part of the module Introduction to English Linguistics, this lecture introduces and explains basic terms, concepts and theories of linguistics - parallel to the Übung Introduction to Linguistics and complementing it. In contrast to the Übung, however, the lecture will have a focus on the development of linguistic thinking. Accordingly, we will explore how and in which historical contexts our modern understanding of language and the underlying models of description have emerged and how they have been motivated. This suggest, at least in parts, a chronological structure of the lecture. The major part of the lecture will deal with the linguistics of the past 100 years. In the early weeks of the term however we will also discuss examples of earlier linguistic approaches back to the earliest traces of linguistic thinking in European antiquity. In spite of its flavour as a History of Linguistics, the main aim of this lecture will be to familiarise students with the relevant notions of linguistic thinking and linguistic analysis.
Because not all regular students are registered in Campus Management, there will be a special enrolment for this lecture in the first week of term. Students who cannot attend the first session are kindly asked to notify me before the beginning of the lecture period.
