Sociolinguistics, World Englishes and Language Teaching This course introduces future teachers to working methods and frames of thought of sociolinguistics and takes the fascinating world of Englishes as a starting point. Understanding the problematic status of 'standard language' is vital in teaching English, which not only has many different traditions of 'standard' but furthermore functions as a global lingua franca, in which non-native language uses have become common. An introduction to basic sociolinguistic concepts allows for a deeper grasp of the socio-political nature and history of standardness, which will guide the first sessions of the course. Afterwards, historical insights into the development of English as a world language, including the development of Pidgin and Creole languages, and into the contemporary role of English in Africa, Asia and Europe will lead to present-day academic debates on English and colonialism, concepts of the native speaker, language rights and the role of language in multilingual realities all over the world.

In the context of this course, we will first of try to understand why a critical perspective on the concept of language and on language norms is important to understand English as a world language, and secondly will wonder how this may translate into state-of-the-art language teaching in urban multilingual classrooms.
