Civil society is an important pillar to democracy. It is organized in a broad variety of organizations of different size and structure, modern digital media even allow individuals to take part in public political discussion.
This seminar aims on analyzing the communication and organization structures of civil society in Europe (and beyond) in order to assess their power and potential to participate in public communication and impact the political process.
Part I:
Following an ntroduction, basic texts dealing with communication patterns in all sections of society (including digital natives), civil society, NGOs etc. will be addressed.
Part II:
Case studies on different countries in terms of
- political system and role of civil society,
- communication structures and
- media use (internet and mass media)
will be discussed.
In the course of the seminar, specific campaigns or organizations could be analyzed and optionally contrasted with developing countries and/ or the US.
