WiSe 14/15: S-Surveying English LiteraturesII: Joyce:Dubliners&Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Kai Martin Wiegandt

Comments

James Joyce's collection of short stories Dubliners (1914) and his novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1914-15) show the author searching for new forms of narrative and a stricter form of the novel. The stories mark the turn to the characters' interior lives to be fully developed in Portrait; tensions between Naturalist and Symbolist poetics structure especially the novel. We will consider narrative and stylistic techniques, various contexts (historical, cultural, literary) and multiple perspectives from which the works may be read. The role played by Joyce's early fiction in the formation of Modernism will be of special interest to us.

In order to fulfil the requirement of active participation, you will have to write response papers of 400 words to three critical essays that will be made available on Blackboard. The response papers have to be uploaded to Blackboard before the class in which the critical essays will be discussed. Students who do not manage to upload three response papers in time cannot write a final term paper (2000 words) and cannot get credit for the seminar.

Each participant is obliged to present minutes of one of the sessions, not exceeding 5 minutes. The order of presentations will be determined at the beginning of the seminar.

Required texts: James Joyce. Dubliners. London: Penguin, 1996. James Joyce. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Ed. R. B. Kershner. Boston, New York: Bedford/St. Martin's, 1993.
