Linguistic introduction to Old and Middle Iranian / Einführung in die sprachwissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit dem Alt- und Mitteliranischen The course will provide an introdution to Old Iranian on the background of the reconstructable history of a common Indian and Iranian lingusitic history and the later presence of Iranian tirbes in the Eurasian steppes and the Iranian plateau. It will concentrate on the two know varieties of written Old Iranian, Old Persian and Avestan, to show how these languages functioned and later developed into the Middle Iranian languages. The emphasis will be on understanding the main features of the moprhological system of Old Iranian (OLd Persian and Avestan).
Towards the end of the semester we will take a first look at the Avestan text zamyad Yasht (Yasht 19, edited by Hintze 1994) which is also an important text about Iranian kingship and the concept of Xwarenah-. The text also provides the term turiia- used to characterise a stranger with a strange language, the first use of the Turan motif. close
