WiSe 15/16: US Foreign Policy and Public Views of War

Curd Benjamin Knüpfer

Kommentar

What role has armed conflict traditionally played in regard to US foreign policy? How can political scientists think about and explain policy outcomes? Why and how does public opinion influence policy decisions and why do public views of war matter? This BA seminar seeks to tackle these broad questions. It will do so, by providing three thematic building blocks, offering (1) an introduction to the history of US foreign policy, including an overview of international relations literature; (2) a focus on public opinion and the interaction this may have with policy-making; (3) methodological and epistemological tools, for students to employ when thinking about aspects of foreign policy formulation in a more nuanced manner and to come up with their own research agendas. Aside from greater familiarity with the specific concepts and topics presented, students are meant to obtain an overview of various important perspectives in contemporary political science. To achieve these goals, each week will feature a reading of one or two key texts, supplemented by additional, optional material. Students will be fully prepared to present and discuss these texts in class. Planning own research projects based on the reading material will play a central role throughout the term, and students seeking to obtain a “Leistungsschein” will be expected to work on and present their research designs during the semester.
