WiSe 15/16: Transnational Chinese Migrations to Latin America. Past and Present

Ximena Alba Villalever, Luis Felipe Rubio Isla

Kommentar

The Chinese Diaspora is a structure in constant movement and transformation. These movements depend on two distinctive elements: on the interrelations between its actors and on the connections or bonds that these actors manage to construct with local spaces and through transnational and translocal interactions. Today there is a much more intimate and complex relationship between migrants and receiving societies. The changes on both the structure of the Diaspora and the strategies of migration depend on the different social and economic situations of the countries in which migrants have settled as well as on the ways in which receiving societies have adapted to this presence. This survey course will introduce students to migratory movements from China to Latin America. With a focus on trans-Pacific human mobility, this seminar will shed light into migratory streams, which have been glossed over or omitted from much of Latin America's history. This multidisciplinary seminar will cover Chinese migrations from the mid-19th Century to the present through both a theoretical and empirical approach in order to present Chinese migrations through different global processes. It will shed light on communities such as those in Mexico, Peru, Cuba, Honduras, and Panama. The medium of instruction will be in English, however, coursework can be done in both Spanish and English.
