WiSe 15/16: Capitalism, Sectionalism, Imigration: From the American Civil War to World War One

Kirsten Twelbeck

Comments

This lecture course deals with American culture in the four decades following the Civil War. Topics include: Reconstruction and the idea of a "Second Founding"; the Reservation era and Chinese exclusion; the "discovery" of national tourism; the "Gilded Age," progressivism and the "New Imperialism"; the emergence of a capitalist-nationalist imaginary; the "New Woman"; urbanization and the New Immigration; social utopias, and media transformation. It is against this framework that we will examine literary phenomena such as the utopian novel, literary realism and naturalism, but also postbellum entertainment industries from Barnum's Museum to early Hollywood film. The lecture course serves as "Grundlagenveranstaltung" of Culture-Module B in the M.A. program. Registration: all participants must be registered via Blackboard and Campus Management before the first session. If you cannot register online, or if you would like to participate, but cannot attend the first session, please contact Dr Twelbeck before the beginning of the term. Requirements: see Syllabus and Course Description (on Blackboard). Students can take this lecture course in conjunction with the seminar "Reconstruction" (same room, immediately after the lecture). close
