In this seminar we will read and reflect on how to read selected texts relevant to the Greek language controversies from the late 18th to the mid-20th century. We will try to situate them in the intellectual environment of their production, so as to understand their point and aim; in so doing, we will take into account reception of earlier texts in the historical unfolding of the controversies, mainly during the 19th century, as well as contemporary (20th and 21st century) assessments. Methodological and epistemological issues will be specifically singled out, as we will attempt to constitute explicit premises for coherent critical reading; this will be related to an overview of the constitution and evolution of the science of language during the same period. The Greek language question will also be dealt with in broader theoretical and comparative frameworks: in the former case we shall look at issues of diglossia, language change and language choice, while in the latter we shall examine parallel cases, e.g. Norwegian and Hebrew, capitalizing on the results of the recent Workshop on Language Choice held in FU-Berlin (in September 2015, as part of the 12th International Conference on Greek Linguistics organized by the Ce.MO.G.).
