WiSe 16/17: Political Media Relations in a Digital Age: Comparative Perspectives

This seminar will examine theoretical approaches for comparing political media relations in different countries. This seminar seeks to critically analyse Hallin and Mancini’s Three Models of Media and Politics within the context of today’s digital media environment, in particular, the categorisation of countries within the model, their understanding of a media system and the applicability of their categories of analysis to the current media environment. Does Hallin and Mancini’s typology of media systems still offer a suitable framework for comparing media systems in a digital age? How have media systems changed? How have political media relations changed? What other theoretical approaches could be considered for comparing political media relations? This seminar will focus in particular on changing political media relations in Germany, Great Britain, the United States, France, Italy, and others. close
