Kommentar

Seminars will take place in English, & the reading materials are predominantly in English. Participants who wish to write their Hausarbeit for this course may do so in English or German The Battle of Hastings is amongst the best-known events in British history, viewed as an event of momentous cultural significance, trauma and change. While the conflict is infamous, its long and short term causes are more obscure. In particular, the fact that England was twice conquered by the Danish kings Swein Forkbeard and Cnut has received far less attention. This paper will examine the tumultuous years surrounding the multiple conquests of England, asking whether the Danish invasions paved the way for the Norman Conquest. We will explore diverse sources, ranging from northern Scandinavia to Byzantium, and from poetry to coinage, discovering the impact of conquest on the culture and lives of those who experienced it.
