WiSe 17/18: Introduction to the Anthropology of Kinship and Relatedness

Thomas Stodulka

Kommentar

The study of human relatedness and kinship has been central to Social and Cultural Anthropology. This seminar introduces students to classic and new debates in kinship studies drawing upon material from a wide range of ethnographic contexts to examine the ways in which societies organize and conceptualize human relationships. It is concerned with the transformation of social structures and processes as well as the connections between kin organizations and power in local communities and post-industrial societies. In addition to the discussion of classic and contemporary approaches to kinship, we will scrutinize the role of ‘substances’ (blood, sperm, cells and other organic and non-organic entities), ‘travelling organs’, transnational adoption, or humanitarian forms of relating and ‘doing good’ with regards to the omnipresent concept of ‘relatedness’ and ‘belonging’. We will also discuss the question whether we can ever not be related to someone or something in an overheating and overly super-connected world. Schließen
