WiSe 17/18: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies II: Mass Media and British Politics

Dorothea Trotter

Kommentar

The mass media do not play an official role in national politics, and yet they exert a powerful influence on the public, the politicians, and the decisions made by both. In these times, politics would not be what they are without the mass media. This is especially true in the United Kingdom and one of the main goals of this course is to begin to understand how and why. ?

In this introductory look at media and British politics, we will examine the role and structure of the news media as a political and economic institution. This will require a close look at the processes of reporting and news gathering as well as the processes of campaigning, electing, and law making? in the United Kingdom? . ?We will look at how media? affect politics, but also how politics affect media and how both affect the lives and lifestyles of the people. Special attention will be given to immigrants in the UK and how they moderate and/or are represented in the media.

Texts: ?

We will be working with the textbook on British Politics ?by Robert Leach, et al. from Palgrave (Second edition or newer), Mass Media and British Politics by Negrine?, ? as well as several excerpts from contemporary English novels. It is advised to purchase the two books before the start of the course. Shorter texts will be made available on Blackboard.

Assessment will be on the basis of regular attendance, active participation in class activities (response papers, short presentations, group work) and the submission of an essay (ca. 2000 words)

Language: The course will be taught in English
