WiSe 17/18: Socio-environmental relations: exploring current themes

The aim of this seminar is to develop an understanding of anthropological approaches to human-environmental relations and use them to assess current themes. The first part of the seminar will focus on different approaches and concepts such as cultural ecology, political ecology, adaptation, vulnerability, resilience, sustainability, environmental knowledge and environmental justice. We will look at both global and local processes through selected ethnographic studies, while considering critical perspectives on social inequality and power relations. In the second part of the seminar, students work in groups to explore current themes such as climate change, the role of international negotiations, resource management, urbanization, changes in production and consumption or other topics of interest. It is possible to conduct small student projects and use them for the term paper.
Please note that the course will be taught in English, however, it is possible to write the term paper in German.
