WiSe 17/18: Transformation in Eastern Europe: Structural Changes in Public Political Communication in the last 30 years

In the seminar, political communication is defined as the public system of communication, which is a functionally general as well as historically specific set of communication structures that facilitate political communication in society. Accordingly, the students will learn about legacies, institutions, hegemonic norms, and international pressures on the public in Eastern Europe during transformation from communist to democratic rule and the enduring consolidation processes thereafter. In addition, the students will read and discuss about the main issues that are overarching political communication today, like the policies of dealing with the past and symbolism by populist parties. After these reading and discussion sessions, the students will work in groups on case studies about single countries, investigating the relevant contexts like changes in the national media systems and old and new strategies of political communication. Finally, students will present their findings and discuss them in comparison. close
