WiSe 17/18: V Community Ecology with R

Additional information / Pre-requisites

Previous experience with the statistical package R is highly desirable but not mandatory for the completion of the course. Attendands are expected to repeat the exercises we do in class at home. At the end of the course attendants will be challenged to produce a report. close

Comments

Inhalt:
There will be a short lecture at the beginning of each day. Practical work will be coupled to paper discussions on the topic of the lecture. In the practical sessions attendants reproduce existing R scripts and solve small exercises to further improve their understanding on the code.

Qualifikationsziele:
Aims: By the end of the course attendants will be able to describe in a non-technical way the fundamental concepts of community ecology. They will additionally be able to reproduce existing scripts written in R and interpret them. Finally they will have witnessed how scientists address complicated concepts when writing articles. While producing the final report attendants will improve and get feedback on their ability to write scientifically.

Objectives:
1. Understanding community ecology:
Generate a concept map of terms related to community ecology Read and comment on a number of influential community ecology papers Visualize the technicalities associated in doing the analysis for these papers
2. Reproducing and interpreting existing R scripts:
Revisit elementary statistics and basic commands in R Familiarize yourselves on the commands required to collate and filter large datasets through repetition. Write an essay on one of the scripts assessed in class close
