Subject: The extermination of the Jews was a central event of European History. Explorations into it have substantially changed our understanding of the past. Although the Shoah had been documented and researched already during World War II, Holocaust Studies as an academic discipline were only established in the 1980s and 1990s. During World War II the Jews were persecuted in many European countries, but the organized mass murders took place in Eastern Europe. A vast majority of the victims lived there while others were deported there from other parts of the continent. Although the Germans initiated the Holocaust and facilitated the murdering of the Jews, they were supported by numerous collaborators in many European countries. The course materials will be made available online. Program: In this seminar, we will study the Holocaust as a transnational genocide and as an element of local history. We will look at the Shoah from different perspectives, familiarize ourselves with new research methods, and will work with documents left by both victims and perpetrators. Is this course suitable for you? This course is open to students from the Arts & Humanities, Cultural Studies, Social Sciences and Economics. In any case, you should be open to new perspectives, interested in reading about the Holocaust, discussing the texts with other students, and analysing aspects of the Shoah, while working with primary sources. Workload and Assessment: In order to obtain 5 ECTS credits, you will have to • Attend the course regularly (at least 13 out of 16 sessions); • Study the weekly course materials (an average of 15-25 pages of English texts per week); • Give a presentation alone or in a group (10-15 min) or submit a short essay (approximately 750 to 1,000 words); • Pass the written examination (90 minutes). close
