WiSe 18/19: Postcolonial Theories of International Relations

Tobias Berger

Kommentar

This course offers a general introduction to postcolonial approaches within International Relations. It covers both contemporary trends within IR theorizing and foundational texts in postcolonial thought, e.g. Frantz Fanon, Edward Said, and Gayatri Spivak. Taught as a block seminar, the course combines theoretical reflection with illustrative case studies from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Whereas the first part of the course covers basic theoretical questions of postcolonial concerns like colonialism, anti-colonial movements, and decolonisation as well as the historical relationship between academic knowledge production and colonial expansion, the second part of the course is clustered around two themes: the constitution of transnational orders and questions of violence, (in)security, and warfare.
