Psychology has historically been mostly concerned with explaining the causal mechanisms that give rise to behavior. In contrast, machine learning provides tools to learn regularities from data and focusses on prediction rather than explanation. We review some of the fundamental concepts and tools of machine learning and discuss examples where these concepts may be used to conduct psychological research that focuses on predictive research questions.
