WiSe 18/19: Global Histories of Labour and Migration

Comments

Migration seems to be the topic of our times. This seminar familiarizes students with key themes in global labour history through the lens of migrations. We will explore the history of this relationship through studying how and if wages, working conditions and/or concepts of society, democracy, nationality, “race” and gender have been altered by voluntary and forced migration movements. – What motivated migration? How do we analyze the intersection between the global demand of (“cheap”) labour that global capital produced and networks of migration that operated along these terms - or sometimes even operated on their own terms? What motivated conflict? How do historians tackle these questions? In order to also integrate the voices, actions and perspectives of the migrants themselves, a special emphasis will be focused on the history of the agency of migrant workers and – if applicable – on their own historical interventions or interpretations of it. This seminar will address select aspects of labour and migration history by engaging with recent scholarly interpretations that either deal with our conceptional understanding of the historical contexts mentioned above, or that speak to specific case studies. With its case-studies approach the seminar will especially focus on the histories of the Asian indentured labour histories, labour migrations in colonial settings as well as female labour migration. In the last quarter of our seminar, we may turn our academic focus to the labour migration to Germany in the 1960s. If the group is interested, we could organize an internal workshop about labour migration to Berlin during the 1960/70s as part of the so-called “guest worker” migration. If students are willing to help organize such encounters, we might also be able to speak to some historical witnesses. close
