WiSe 20/21: Educational Theories: Introduction to the Sociology of Education

Maria Keil

Kommentar

The Sociology of Education is a broad field in the social sciences and connected to various other disciplines like educational studies and pedagogy or economics. This linkage is also reflected in the theoretical approaches that are used by educational researchers. In this course, we will get an overview of the sociology of education by studying theoretical approaches as well as empirical research studies. The aim of the course is to get an understanding of different theoretical paradigms and concepts and associated research designs. Contentwise we will focus on the role of schools and institutions of higher education, look at different educational investments and strategies and discuss the question of how social inequalities are reproduced through education in times of educational expansion. For an empirical overview of educational systems in Europe and the linkage between education, stratification and integration in European societies, a combination of this course with the course “Integration through Education. A European Perspective” (module 1) is suggested. Schließen
