Kommentar
"Coloured Revolutions" seems to be a special case of transition in successor states of former multinational entities: the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. Peaceful mass protests against electoral fraud in Serbia (2000), in Georgia (2003), Ukraine (2004/2005), and to some extent in Kyrgyzstan (2005, 2010) led to the resignation or overthrow of the incumbent. The aim of the seminar is to analyze attempted and successful "Coloured Revolutions" in Eastern Europe. The events in Eastern Europe will be also compared to the "Arab Spring" of 2011.
The seminar provides students with theoretical framework that builds the basis for the analysis of the cases (Serbia, Georgia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Russia). Internal and external factors which may have an impact on the success or failure of mass protests, such as the regime's and opposition's strategy, linkage, leverage and diffusion, are investigated. Scientific and media discourses on the field are discussed. Outcomes of "Coloured Revolutions" will be evaluated towards the end of the semester.
