SoSe 13: The Sociology of War and Armed Conflict
Markus Kienscherf
Kommentar
The problematic of organized violence hardly plays a prominent role in sociological research. However, since war has played a prominent role in the formation of modern social orders and continues to shape contemporary social life, it warrants sociological analysis. In this seminar we will, first of all, discuss the role of organized violence in both classical and contemporary social thought. Secondly, we will analyze the relations between warfare and the human body, both in terms of preparing bodies for war and injuring bodies in war. Thirdly, we will examine both the historical and the contemporary impact of warfare on social stratifications of race, class and gender. Fourthly, we will discuss recent trends towards the (re)privatization of organized violence. Last but not least, we will look at current debates about the relationship between globalization and the so-called new wars. Schließen
