SoSe 13: POLITICS OF CONTEMPORARY SOUTH ASIA
Antìa Mato Bouzas, Dietrich Reetz
Kommentar
The course seeks to provide an introduction to the contemporary politics and international relations in the South Asian region. It is aimed at discussing contemporary theory of conflict and international relations from the region that addresses the region's requirements. Therefore, the course examines state formation and nation building in India and Pakistan in relation to the process of partition of the subcontinent after 1947 and the general international context of the Cold-War period till present. It also pays attention to the understanding of the main regional state actors, India and Pakistan, in terms of the bilateral dynamics of rivalry that make South Asia one of the conflict-prone zones in the world. In this context, the Kashmir dispute is analysed, not only as a main symbol of India-Pakistan hostility but also as to problematize the complex relation between state, community and identity in the region.
