SoSe 13: Confinement, Punishment, Rehabilitation: The Prison in North American History and Culture
Gudrun Löhrer
Kommentar
There is a variety of changing perceptions in the history of incarceration. Prisons were at times regarded as institutions of punishment, of betterment or of rehabilitation. 19th century perceptions of the purpose of prisons differ tremendously from the purpose of privatized, for-profit institutions in the late 20th/early 21st century. With a strong focus on primary texts, the seminar will explore the history and culture of this 'total institution' in the United States. An excursion to a prison in Berlin is planned to be part of the seminar.
