SoSe 13: Bodies, Symbols, Rituals: a Performative Approach to American History
Sebastian Jobs
Kommentar
Public festivals and ceremonies are acts of social communication which derive their force from formal order and rules, on the one hand, and excessive joy, on the other. In situations of crisis, change and conflict, they are supposed to strengthen identity claims and to produce points of identification and legitimacy. However, they always remain open for more than one clear interpretation. This seminar will examine the role public symbols, rituals and performances have played in U.S. history, not only by looking at official performances (e.g. parades), but also by considering individual and social festivities and performances (e.g. political rallies and gender performances).
