This seminar offers a survey of the history of the Cold War both in the world and in Berlin. It aims to exhibit and discuss critically the causes, courses and consequences of this 'era of extremes'. From a global history perspective, the course will examine - beyond the scope of traditional political and diplomatic history - also the narratives and representations of the Cold War history then and today. It will highlight its effects on culture, mentality/collective memory and the conduction of foreign policy. The role of Berlin, both as a hot spot of the Cold War and of memorialization will be explored by tours to some of the cold war sites.
Students are asked to participate actively in class.
Class schedules will be distributed during the first session.
