Kommentar
The course will give an overview of the evolution of the Middle English lyric, both secular and religious. Attention will not only be paid to differences of genre, style, versification and metaphor, but also to the cultural background which gave rise to these works and to the manuscripts which provide them. When appropriate, parallels in the visual arts will be pointed out to highlight traditional concepts and their reflection in medieval and modern literature.
Language of instruction: English. Required language level: C1-C2.
Procedure and assessment: Each week poems and texts will be earmarked for study at home and discussion in class. During the course, students will be asked to perform practical exercises in order to build up skills in interpreting lyric verse. The final mark will be based on participation in class, a presentation and a 4000-word final essay.
Material: A reader of primary and secondary texts will be made available at the beginning of the semester.
