SoSe 13: S-Colonial and Postcolonial Literatures II: Green Politics in a Brown Country
Verity Burgmann
Kommentar
Australia is the driest inhabited continent on earth-'a wide, brown land'-a feature often emphasised in literature and film. It is also a 'brown' country in terms of its economic development, so it has the dubious distinction of having even higher per capita greenhouse gas emissions than the United States. But Australia has also produced a strong green movement, which emphasises the country's peculiar vulnerability to the worst effects of global warming due to its physical brownness and which significantly challenges Australia's economic brownness. The Australian Greens currently hold a balance-of-power position in federal parliament and prompted the carbon tax introduced recently by the Gillard Labor Government. Using literary texts, film and political writings, this course examines the rise of green politics in a society that greatly needs greening. Schließen
