Kommentar
Language contact is the use of one or more languages or varieties at the same time that have mutual impact on each other. In this course, we will take a look at different forms of language contact, the circumstances under which they occur, and possible consequences. After introducing the basic con-cepts of language contact we will focus on single phenomena such as pidgins and creoles, code switching, and multilingualism. We will approach these main topics from different linguistic levels using historical, syntactic, morphological and pragmatic analysis. Pidgins and creoles will give us a special insight into language genesis and change. Code switching, the use of different codes in the same conversation, offers interesting perspectives on syntax, conversational analysis, and questions of language and identity.
Subsequently, students will take a closer look at case examples using different theoretical approaches and present them in class. Further course requirements are regular attendance and active participation, weekly readings, and a paper based on the presentation.
