SoSe 13: Freedom of the Press - Normative Origins and Global Challenges
Saskia Sell
Kommentar
Freedom of the Press is one of the major dimensions of Freedom of Communication. While it is legally implemented in democratic societies and considered a basic necessity for democracy itself, it is still constantly challenged on multiple levels in a global and mediatized public sphere. This seminar aims to shed light on normative origins of the concept as well as recent ethical developments, focusing on research from the field of journalism studies but also integrating aspects from political philosophy and communication ethics and considering the Human Rights perspective. Work on conceptual and theoretical research is linked to different case studies that provide examples of how Freedom of the Press is still constantly negotiated, despite being regarded as an important good in general. These challenges point towards the fact that legal implementation is not enough but that there is a constant necessity to exercise society's basic liberties in order to preserve them.
