SoSe 13: The Reagan Revolution
Florian Plum
Kommentar
When Ronald Reagan delivered his farewell address to the American people in 1989, the United States had experienced a decade of fundamental change: the role of government in the economy was diminished; the Cold War, although intensifying in the early 80s, drew to a close after a series of disarmament agreements; liberal values faced a serious challenge from social conservatives. Scholars and journalists have often associated these shifts - particularly in the realm of economic policy - with the "Reagan Revolution." Whether the change effected by the Reagan administration was indeed profound enough to merit the term revolution, however, remains hotly debated.
In this B.A. seminar, we will delve into this debate by examining the key concepts and components of the "Reagan Revolution." After putting Reagan's election and his presidency into historical perspective, we will focus primarily (though not exclusively) on his administration's economic policies. Our inquiry will be based on a selection of primary and secondary sources.
