The aim of this course is to prepare students to use English effectively in their professional career, with particular emphasis on developing the skills necessary in formal situations such as oral presentations, job applications and interviews.
Learning OutcomesDuring the course, students will learn:
- to develop oral and written communication skills
- to express themselves with clarity and precision in English
- to listen and respond accurately within a group discussion
- to present themselves effectively in an interview situation
- to reflect analytically on their own communication strengths and weaknesses
This course builds on the basic communication skills already developed in Unit 1, with additional emphasis on written communication. As such, this course is only open to students who have completed Unit I.
Each student will be required to submit a portfolio of documents required for applying for a job: letter of application, CV, letter of motivation, as well as a business letter and written presentations. Students will also be required to take part in a number of simulated job interviews, both as interviewer and interviewee, and to take part in the discussion and analysis that follows each interview session.
As in the first unit of this course, each student will be required to give a 30-minute oral presentation and keep a journal of his or her own development. A critical analysis of their own individual progress, including written assessments of their job interviews, will be submitted in the final portfolio (2500 words) at the end of the course.
The course will be held in English. Students must have an active command of sophisticated, near native-speaker language skills (C1 / C2).
Kompetente Sprachverwendung: hohes Sprachniveau bis fast muttersprachliche Sprachkompetenz (C1 / C2).
