Kommentar
The process of immigration to the United States has always been entangled with arguments about the nature of American identity. This course examines these two histories in relation to each other through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with special attention to theoretical debates about race, ethnicity, and nationalism. Topics to be addressed include assimilation, nativism, the nature of ethnic identity, the evolution of racial thought in the U.S., immigration policy, transnationalism, and the rise of multiculturalism. We will also consider a few key primary sources in connection with our discussions of the historical literature. Schließen
