SoSe 13: The European Union in the World

The course analyses the role and activities of the European Union in the international politics. The first part introduces the main concepts, actors and institutions of the EU foreign policy, with an emphasis on debate about the EU 'actorness' and the concepts of civilian and normative power and the theories used to explain EU foreign policy making. The concepts of 'europeanization' of EU member-states foreign policies, and 'interregionalism' are also discussed. The second part of the course analyses the contemporary relations of the EU with countries and regional organizations in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The main aim of the course is to present the most used analythical tools to study EU foreign policies and EU relations with other actors in the international politics, and to apply them in a number of cases studies. Students are expected to use the analytical tools to analyse a number of questions regarding the case studies, such as: the patterns of change and continuity of EU foreign policies, the perception of 3rd countries about the EU, driving forces of specific foreign policies, europeinization of EU foreign policies, as well as to develop comparative analyses. close
