SoSe 13: Postcolonial theories in IR
Bilgin Ayata
Comments
Since the past two decades, postcolonial theories are increasingly finding their way into the social sciences contributing to a rethinking of the basic parameters of how the world is being constructed and analyzed in the various disciplines. The field of International Relations is in this regard a latecomer, as postcolonial approaches remain still marginal and struggle to gain some echo in what was once described by Stanley Hoffman to be an American Social Science'. In this seminar we will first examine the critiques that postcolonial contributions have been raising to conventional IR and engage thoroughly with alternative postcolonial conceptualizations of order, sovereignty, power. The aim of the seminar is to provide a comprehensive and solid understanding of postcolonial theories in IR and explore its limits and potentials to reconceptualize International Relations beyond eurocentricism.
