SoSe 13: Fundamental Concepts of Statistical Data Analysis
Frank Lettau
Comments
Systematic treatment of fundamental statistical concepts, ideas and methods of analysis. Explanation of basic concepts like variable, unit of observation, sample, statistical (between-) variation, experimental (within-)variation, correlation and causality, univariate descriptive statistics, bivariate descriptive statistics, statistical inference. Outlook towards multivariate methods.
The approach is hands-on, with an actual data-set (taken from the US General Social Survey) and the widely-used computer program SPSS (now renamed IBM-SPSS).
All students will be required to take a written test (´Klausur´) towards the end of the semester. Those students who have registered for ´Leistungschein´ will be graded, the others just have to pass the test.
A seminar text will be provided. A mailing list will be installed as an effective means of communication, details will be given in the first lecture.
Recommended: Lecture 15020 Methoden der Politikwissenschaft from the previous Winter Semester.
