SoSe 13: American Politics and Film
Johannes Dudziak und Thomas Greven
Comments
There is probably no country that produces more films and TV shows featuring politics than the US. For example, countless films feature US presidents and election campaigns. Political scientists are well advised to study films and TV because these media shape citizens' understanding of political institutions, actors, processes, and policies. While the impact of film and TV on political culture, i.e. the values of a population, is difficult to measure, these media offer the possibility to discuss important questions of governance, participation, power, cleavages, and conflicts, with respect to their representation and reception.
The study of film and politics, with the goal of moving beyond passive reception and towards critical analysis, requires more than the usual workload: Students will have to watch the films on their own time, and consider not only political science literature but also film and cultural studies, as well as literature on the various issues and time periods covered in the films.
