SoSe 13: U.S. Economic Policy - Case Studies

This is a topics course which will explore and analyze key issues in contemporary American Economic Policy. The course will be taught in English, with each week generally focusing on a different topic. There will be a 2 hour seminar on Monday to introduce the issue and a 2 hour seminar on Wednesday for reading, analysis, and discussion of specific case studies. Topics covered will include, but are not limited to, contemporary U.S. monetary policy, the housing bubble and financial crisis of 2007/2008, macroeconomic effects of financial crises and policy responses, minimum wage legislation, and U.S. health reform.
Course requirements: The requirements are active participation, biweekly 1-page response papers to the required readings and a final 15 page essay. The seminar will be taught in English. Ability and willingness to read English texts is essential in any case. Texts will be made available on Blackboard.
Registration: students wishing to participate in this seminar need to register early with the department of economics (R 232, Tel. 838 536 03, economics@jfki.fu-berlin.de). Students absolutely need to attend the first session. An electronic copy of all written course work must be send to econarchive@jfki.fu-berlin.de to be considered fulfilment of the course requirements. close
