SoSe 13: Early American Sociology
Peter Fischer
Comments
Sociology was born in Europe, but the field grew most dramatically in the USA. Also the early
American sociology differed from its counterpart in Europe. To understand the pathways it has
taken, we need to look into the history of sociology in America. After that, we will focus on selected
prominent exponents and their writings. These are:
Jane Addams (1860-1935), William Graham Sumner (1840-1910), Lester Frank Ward (1841-1913),
Charles Horton Cooley (1864-1929) and Albion Woodbury Small (1864-1929).
The course is not only an invitation into the history of the social sciences, it can also be seen as a
way to understand the development of the American society.
