SoSe 13: S-Lit. Stud.: Periods-Genres-Concepts: Literary Studies II: Alan Moore and the Victorians
Jeff Thoss
Comments
This course focuses on two Alan Moore comic books and their relationship to the Victorian age and literature. In The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen , Vol. 1 (1999) and 2 (2003), Moore and artist Kevin O'Neill create a massive pastiche of nineteenth-century literature that freely mingles the classics with pulp fiction. In From Hell (1999), Moore and artist Eddie Campbell locate the origins of the twentieth century in late-Victorian London via an account of the Ripper murders. After a brief introduction to the medium of comics, we will discuss both works in connection to topics such as postmodernism, Neo-Victorianism, historiographic metafiction, intertextuality and intermediality as well as visual and print culture.
Participants will have to meet the standard requirements: regular attendance and a presentation are obligatory, credits can be obtained by submitting a term paper. The class will be taught in English.
Required texts (any edition/format will do): Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol 1 and 2; Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, From Hell.
