In this lecture, the complex relationships between language and society will be examined. Among the relevant issues to be discussed are geographical language variation, language change, language and social class, language and gender, language and ethnicity, bilingualism and the multilingual society, the study of language attitudes, language policy and language rights and the study of pidgin and creole languages.
