SoSe 13: Sociolinguistics and Varieties of English II: Celtic Englishes
Susanne Flach
Comments
The former Celtic-speaking areas in the British Isles are home to a number of varieties of English that differ quite substantially from what is known as "Standard (British) English". In this seminar, we will investigate the so-called "Celtic Englishes" in more detail with respect to selected lexical, morphosyntactic and semantic-pragmatic phenomena. We shall also address sociolinguistic aspects about these varieties' histories and language contact on a more general level. Although the focus will be on the morphosyntax of Irish, Welsh and Scottish Englishes, students are welcome to suggest projects beyond these geographical and/or linguistic areas. Requirements are regular attendance and participation in group discussions, a presentation and a term paper. close
