SoSe 13: S-Historical Linguistics: History of English II:Focus on corpus-based approaches

In this course we will examine the changes the English language has
undergone from its beginning to the present day. You will be acquainted
with some general principles of language change in relation to particular
developments in the fields of English phonology, morphology, lexicology
and syntax. We will then seek explanations for the emergence of the
various present-day Englishes, characterize these and trace their origin.
Students in this seminar are required to do an in-class presentation
either one of the theoretical frameworks to be discussed or on one of the
varieties of English.
