SoSe 13: Close Reading: Ethnographies on Gender, Citizenship and Religion in Indonesia
Eric Anton Heuser
Comments
This seminar is designed as a close reading course of new ethnographies on
Indonesia. In particular, the course will focus on works that address the
intersections of gender, religion, and citizenship in the cultural context
of the Indonesian nation-state.
The first sessions of the class introduce the medium of the “ethnography”
as a methodological tool to present long term stationary anthropological
fieldwork. The knowledge gained in those sessions will provide the
theoretical frame to analyse the ethnographies that will be read in the
reminder of the class. By referring to works like “Gender Diversity in
Indonesia: Sexuality, Islam and Queer Selves: Beyond Gender Binaries” by
Sharyn Graham Davis, “A coincidence of desires” by Tom Boellstorff, and
“Falling into the Lesbi World” by Evelyn Blackwood, students will explore
the diversity of gender constructs in postcolonial Indonesia as well their
relationship to political discourses.
