SoSe 13: The 1950s: Transformations in Postwar American Culture
Lars Lierow
Comments
This seminar will examine the transformations American culture underwent after the Second World War, during the period that roughly coincides with the 1950s. It will also explore the memories, imagery, and beliefs encapsulated in the phrase The Fifties. Discussion topics include: the impact of cold war politics, the expansion of consumer culture, the civil rights movement, the role of science fiction, mass media, and
television, the beat generation, and competing gender ideals. We will utilize primary documents from the period as well as scholarship about it in order to interrogate buzz words like "cold war," "anti-communisim," "civil rights," "conformity," and "beatniks." The seminar will enable you to discuss both types of sources critically and develop a differentiated understanding of this historical moment, keeping in mind the ongoing
contests over the meaning of "American" culture and the nation's postwar course. close
