SoSe 13: Crime and the Police in the United States

This seminar will provide you with a critical sociological perspective on the contentious issue of US crime control. We will look at various sociological explanations of crime; sketch the contours of the US criminal justice apparatus; discuss the political utility of crime and crime control; examine the impact of crime control on class and race relations; look into the persistence of controversial penal practices, such as mass incarceration and the death penalty; and analyze the institution of the police as well as various policing practices. close
